  12.        Use the network manager to configure an ip address and turn
  13.        on networking.  The ip address may be assigned by the
  14.        network service provider, but can be any valid ip address.
  15.        If the service provider does not provide the ip address, an
  16.        address negotiation should take place when you connect, and
  17.        the address you entered will change.

  19.        To turn off the messages warning you that you have no ec0
  20.        carrier, you can either install a terminator (available from
  21.        many 3rd party networking products vendors) or configure ec0
  22.        down.  See the ISDN/PPP help or consult the networking help
  23.        pages for further details.  The default state for routed is
  24.        on, and for gated is off.

  26.        If your system is not connected to the Ethernet, you should
  27.        also use chkconfig(1M) to turn off routed. See the PPP help
  28.        for further details.  When shipped from the factory, routed
  29.        is on by default.  You can use chkconfig(1M) to make sure
  30.        gated is configured off.  Gated is configured off as the
  31.        default shipped state.

  35.        4.2.1  _S_e_c_u_r_i_t_y  PPP advertises your ip address to your
  36.        service provider.  This could be a security issue when your
  37.        system is connected to your local net.  For information on
  38.        preventing this situation, you can consult several network
  39.        security books (on setting up firewalls) available from most
  40.        computer bookstores.

  42.        Also note that the file /etc/ppp.conf contains unencrypted
  43.        ppp passwords and thus should be readable and writable only
  44.        by root.
